One minute remaining in the period...

Advanced apologies for the overly nostalgic post.

In honor of the second anniversary of my collegiate graduation (eek!), I would like to make a list of things that I miss about my alma mater.

  1. Mikey’s Special. For all you non’s, a Mikey’s “Spesh” is a reverse pizza. Sauce on top, cheese on bottom, pure happiness in the middle. Eating a Mikey’s is the closest experience one can have to heaven, without dying first.
  2. The Tick Tock Inn – Front bar. No Bostonian bar has yet to compare to this old rundown, leaking, favorite. You will always have my heart, ticker.
  3. 19 Judson’s kiddy pool, cold dorm, kitchen and back deck
  4. The Tick Tock – Back Bar. So hot, the walls sweat.
  5. Chicken Salad: both a la Partridge and a la Newell
  6. Having a student ID that doubles as a meal card…(why can’t Driver’s Licenses do that.)
  7. the ability to wear a sweatshirt, spandex and Uggs everwhere….and having it be socially acceptable
  8. Potsdam NY, and the culinary delicacies that reside there.
  9. being overly drunk in a place where its not just normal, but often encouraged!
  10. double lime rickey with gin…or vodka!
  11. sober drivers. These exist in Boston; they are called cabs, and they come with an expensive bill and a sketchy driver (usually muttering to himself in some unrecognizable language)
  12. Bid Day (insert cued “aw” whenever you feel appropriate.)
  13. Being surrounded by people who appreciate good music such as Bette Davis Eyes, Wagonwheel, Shake It, and Bleeding Love.
  14. Dana. Brunch.
  15. Being able to go to the grocery store in full theme party attire, only to find yourself feeling overdressed. (RIP P&C.)
  16. having my nearest and dearests all within walkable distance of each other including my witty/gin loving, redhead counterpart (you should probably read her blog too, http://betteroffred.wordpress.com/), da boyz (yes, all of them collectively), my fellow Sudburian and pool enthusiast, my big/ psychologist, my tri-delt sistahhhs, the loyal and laughing shorty, the [often hated] S6, my future Charlestown roommate, and “Barb, shut the eff up.”

…and Clarkson still sucks!

Mint Throwups?

Saturday is Derby day. Derby Day means family Derby party. Fam Derby party means Mint Julips. Mint Julips means Bourbon.

Problem? I hate bourbon and/or whiskey. (Yes, they taste the same.)

Why? Two words. Swim. House.

It all started fall of my freshman year. I was a swim team groupie, and proud of it. What do swim team groupies do? They party at the Swim House, naturally. After a few parties here and there, I was so very proud of myself when I ventured to a Swim House party solo…and dressed in duct tape…and only duct tape. Luckily, I arrived to warm hugs, cheers, and a copious amount of booze.
After getting settled, well as settled as I could be in duct tape, a friend and I decided that it was only appropriate to take shots…and lots of them. At first Justin and I were responsible, you know, as responsible as we could be while taking shots and cheering on our other freshman friends in their game of Beirut. Eventually the allure of sporadic shots wore off, and we found ourselves taking shots for every holiday that we could think of…by month. January was easy; naturally we drank to New Years and quickly moved to February. February we drank to Valentine’s Day and, being the feisty freshman we were, we also drank to the important American holiday that is President’s Day. In March we obviously drank to the great St. Patrick, quickly followed by a drink to April’s Easter. Then things get blurry. I know we drank to Cinco De Mayo, only because I had photo documentation of it. Other than that, I am not sure what other holidays we chose to celebrate…

Fast forward to the end of the night. Piggy back ride home from said swimmer friends, also wearing anything but clothes, and a complimentary duct tape removal treatment, courtesy of my fellow peanut butter connoisseur, future roommate and a pair of scissors. Thanks Jack Daniels!

Lesson learned?

Nope!

One Thursday night of Spring, 2005, I forgot about aforementioned ABC night. As it had become routine, I headed to the Swim House with a couple of my closest near and dears, ready to conquer booze, the bar, and ultimately a mikeys. Things were never normal at the Swim House unless things were abnormal, and I should have known the night was going South quick…the swimmers had recruits.

Again our evening started with shots. Then things got [normally] abnormal. New house rule? All shots were to be taken off of the body of a particular swimmer. This doesn’t sound too weird and/or disgusting, until you learn that said swimmer was a hairy, belly button lint filled individual. Ew. No need to relive that memory.

At any rate, JD strikes again. Kristin is carried home…again, and spent the night in the shower sobering up. Oh, memories.

Lesson learned. To this day, if I am forced to take a shot/drink a drink/swig a sip of whiskey, I immediately wince and/or gag.

Which brings me back to my original debacle. Mint Julips? Naw, I’ll just drink vodka, thank you!

It has been preached to all of us: a university’s marketing strategy to show potential future students how (insert every school you visited) is a unique learning environment, in the perfect location, enriched with deep tradition and supported by a wonderful community. Right.

On said tour, the potential pupil and family, is escorted around campus by a bubbly, upstanding and well-versed student of the school’s population. Often times, the tour revolves around the top things to do (at said university) before you graduate.

At my alma mater, this list includes a hike the Adirondack Mountains, a coffee in the book store, a Moving Up Day ceremony, and a student art gallery in the new heart building. The well thought out list encompasses the pristine, PG rated, you should want to go here, we are your university, you are home here type of activity catalog that all schools want to vibe to potential students, and to their “my child doesn’t drink, and definitely won’t while they are in college” parents. This aforementioned list doesn’t typify my collegiate experience, nor does it yours.

Since the admissions team has so thoughtfully and articulately compiled a list of things TO do while in college (which a majority of us never did), I have taken it upon myself to compile a similar list, only mine is the list of things NOT to do while in college (a list of which the majority of us have dabbled into…and potentially regretted.)

My DO NOT do before you graduate list (or do, and then later regret)
*disclaimer: I am not the culprit to all of these acts, but have witnessed them all and seen the regret come soon after

  • DO NOT walk (shame or no shame) home between the hours of 9AM and 12PM
  • DO NOT walk home from anywhere having participated in a theme party the night before
  • DO NOT be afraid to wear oversized football sweatshirts/pants from aforementioned walk home
  • DO NOT be a make-out bandit in the back bar of the Tick Tock. Someone will remember it, even if it isn’t you that does.
  • DO NOT fall asleep on the delta kitchen counter.
  • DO NOT sit on the Tick Tock floor. I am not sure why anyone would ever do that, but I have seen it done. Ew.
  • DO NOT heavily pregame before any formal. That means no shots. The same goes for mixers.
  • DO NOT steal Christmas trees on walks home from the bar, only to display them in your common room. You will get fined.
  • DO NOT dance on the pool table in a dress. You do not want to be that girl…(and we all know who I am talking about)
  • DO NOT steal cushions from SUNY Potsdam Frat porches. God only knows what has lived/slept/puked/had sex on that surface.
  • DO NOT accept friendship requests from current professors. You may do so, but expect your pristine reputation to be tainted quickly.
  • DO NOT put off your school work, just because you’re pledging…and do not lose your pledge pin.
  • DO NOT walk home barefoot from anywhere (unless you enjoy the bottom of your feet resembling the color of charcoal)…wearing flip flops out can also achieve the same look.
  • DO NOT go to frat formals outside of the country.
  • DO NOT let anyone turn a camera on while you are on the toilet.
  • DO NOT live with swingers while abroad. If your host mother meets you drunk on the late bus and proceeds to take her finger, smudge the chocolate off your face (thank you to the crepe street vendors) and into your mouth, you know you have a problem…or a party.
  • DO NOT be discouraged from sharing pizza with semi-strangers, lets be honest, you will probably be making out later anyways.
  • DO NOT eat Denise’s cheesy bread
  • DO NOT fall for the “I am in Beta” pick-up line.
  • DO NOT fall down the stairs at 20 Pine Street.
  • DO NOT forget to call a sober driver before 1:50AM, or you will have to walk home…but who doesn’t love a -30 degree walk home sans mittens?
  • DO NOT to go to Dana Dining Hall and expect to avoid seeing the one person you don’t want to see
  • DO NOT take psych with a lab, edu with a lab, and Spanish with a lab in the same semester. Seeing the light of day will become a challenge.
  • DO NOT talk to (insert name of all college hook ups here)
  • DO NOT wear your good pair of heels/uggs/flats/jeans to the bar. They will get trashed (kind of like you will.)
  • DO NOT crash a sorority mixer as a freshman…even if you are invited by the fraternity hosting it.
  • DO NOT go shot for shot with your football manfriend to prove that you are tough. You aren’t, and he can most definitely drink you under the table.
  • DO NOT get sick on said manfriend after said shots.
  • DO NOT buy your family’s Christmas presents at the bookstore. They do not want wine glasses with your future alma mater’s logo engraved in them.
  • DO NOT loft your bed or date someone who does. Its hard to get into, especially after a drink or two, and you feel like a five year old every time you wake up. It is, however, a true treat if the aforementioned football manfriend slams his head into the ceiling.
  • DO NOT pull an all-nighter. Unless you have the next 3 days off to recover, all nighters are the worst decision ever.
  • DO NOT go against your gut…

I am sure this list will continue to grow, and please feel free to add any along the bottom if there is an experience you regret, that I have most likely willingly forgot.
